In 1989, Monsignor Chet Michael founded the Spiritual Direction Institute (SDI), a two-year program designed to teach lay Christians the art of spiritual direction. The purpose of SDI is to give participants the necessary spiritual tools for one's own spiritual growth and to train each student to give spiritual direction to others. Classes meet one Saturday each month, except July and August, and there are two weekend retreats held each year in May and September. In addition to the classes and retreats, each student is expected to spend five hours each week in prayer and five hours each week in study. The classes are typically held at Church of the Incarnation in Charlottesville, VA and the retreats are typically held at Camp Bethel in Fincastle, VA. Total estimated cost of the program is under $600 for the two years.
